Born in Prauge and coming to Canada with her family in 1968, Jana loves writing for the voice, both solo and choral works, and setting poetry to music — for example, ‘Green and Gold’ for soprano and piano (settings of poetry by P.K. Page, toured across Canada in 2017 by Clarisse Tonigussi), was commissioned for the Wider Boundaries of Daring poetry conference (Windsor), and the choral work ‘Song of Life’, commissioned for Then, Now, & Beyond… a Festival of Music by Women (Ottawa). Her choral setting of ‘Back to Babylon’ by Viggo Mortensen was premiered in New Zealand in 2012. Jana Skarecky is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre. She has been Chair of the Association of Canadian Women Composers, and has served on the National Council of the Canadian League of Composers. She also teaches music in Mississauga, and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Selected works

  • Deep Peace - SATB a capella. Perhaps Skarecky's most popular choral work, this piece takes text from the Irish Blessing, as well as from texts by John Gracen Brown. With a folk like lilt, as well as contemporary choral harmony, this piece will have familiar elements as well as something new for a mixed youth or university choir.

Besides being a composer, Jana is also a painter and visual artist, with many of her paintings being created in parallel with her compositions. Concerts featuring Jana's compositions are also often accompanied by displays of her art.
